Conway's Leech Lattice Construction via Golay Code and E8 Connections — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Conway's simple construction of the Leech lattice in 24 dimensions, and its relation to E8 root lattices and deep holes in vertex operator algebras. MATH: Leech lattice is the unique even unimodular lattice in 24 dimensions with no roots (norm-2 vectors). Its construction uses the binary Golay code (length 24, weight 8) and the Lorentzian lattice II_{25,1}. The E8 lattice is the even unimodular lattice in 8 dimensions with root system E8 (240 roots, each norm 2). The covering density comparison shows Leech lattice is locally optimal, while E8 is not. CONNECTION: The Leech lattice's automorphism group is the Conway group Co0, order 8,315,553,613,086,720,000, which contains the golden ratio φ = 1.618... in its character table and in the scaling of certain deep holes. The ratio 0.618 (1/φ) appears in the minimal norm of deep holes. The E8 lattice's root system has Coxeter number 30, linking to base-60 (2×30) and the 60° angles of its Dynkin diagram.
