Exploring the Robust Benefits of Optimized Pure and Hybrid Interleaved Learning on Mathematics Performance, Retention, and Transfer

The study investigates the effects of optimized pure and hybrid interleaved learning approaches on students’ mathematics performance, retention, and transfer. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research involved a heterogeneous sample of seventy-seven participants. The participants were divided into two groups: the Pure Interleaved Learning group and the Hybrid Interleaved Learning group. Baseline analyses confirmed that the groups were comparable prior to the intervention. Both groups received structured instruction, practice, and distributed re-practice aligned with their respective interleaved learning formats. To assess students’ mathematics performance, retention, and transfer, three tests specific to each were developed and validated. Results revealed a significant difference in mathematics performance and retention between pre- and post-intervention data within both groups. This indicates that both interleaved learning approaches positively influenced mathematics performance and knowledge retention. Comparative results between groups further showed that the hybrid interleaved learning group demonstrated higher mathematics performance. However, regarding knowledge transfer, no significant improvement was observed between pre- and postintervention measurements. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in knowledge transfer between interleaved learning groups after the intervention. In conclusion, this research highlights the robust instructional potential of optimized pure and hybrid interleaved learning strategies in enhancing mathematics performance and knowledge retention.
