Three-Dimensional Volumetric Analysis of Chin Augmentation Using Hyaluronic Acid Filler: A Prospective Study
PURPOSE: Chin augmentation plays a central role in facial aesthetics by enhancing jawline shape and projection to improve facial proportions and balance. While surgical techniques provide durable correction, injectable fillers offer a minimally invasive alternative. The volumetric behavior of high-elastic modulus hyaluronic acid fillers in the chin is not well defined. This early-phase study prospectively evaluated short-term volumetric changes and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following chin augmentation with HA filler. METHODS: Adults aged 22-55 years were enrolled. Juvéderm Volux (Allergan Aesthetics, AbbVie) was injected onto the periosteal, submuscular plane by a single surgeon. Three-dimensional photogrammetry (VECTRA-H2, Canfield Scientific) quantified volumetric changes immediately and at 14, 30, and 90 days. Tissue Displacement Factor (TDF), Effective Volume (EV), and Volume Maintenance (VM) were calculated. FACE-Q instruments assessed PROs. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (mean age 42.8 ± 10.6 years; mean BMI 25.2 ± 3.4 kg/m²) underwent augmentation with a mean injection volume of 2.86 ± 0.36 mL. The mean TDF was 1.65 ± 0.46, reflecting robust immediate lift. EV at 14 days was 104.2 ± 21.4%. VM remained high at 79.8 ± 10.2% (30 days) and 62.1 ± 25.7% (90 days). FACE-Q scores for chin shape, lower face, underchin, and overall appearance demonstrated significant improvement from baseline (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Juvéderm Volux HA filler provides effective chin augmentation, producing strong immediate volumetric response, sustained volume retention, and significant improvements in patient-reported satisfaction through 90 days. Though larger studies are needed, these findings support Volux as a minimally invasive alternative for lower facial contouring.
