Real Quadratic Units Generate Quasicrystals with Class Number Bounds — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Real quadratic field units generate quasicrystalline orders with class number bounds linked to irrational geometric scaling. | MATH: Let \( \varepsilon > 1 \) be a fundamental unit in a real quadratic field \( \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}) \). The order \( \mathcal{O} = \mathbb{Z}[\varepsilon] \) is unit-generated. Class number bounds depend on \( d \) and the regulator \( R = \log \varepsilon \). Quasicrystal diffraction indices are irrational, with icosahedral point group symmetry (order 60). | CONNECTION: The golden ratio \( \varphi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618 \) is the fundamental unit of \( \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5}) \). Its powers \( \varphi^n \) yield scaling factors \( \varphi, \varphi^2 \approx 2.618, \varphi^{-1} \approx 0.618, \varphi^{-2} \approx 0.382 \). These appear in quasicrystal tiling (Penrose tilings) and icosahedral symmetry (60 = 5×12, base-60 harmonic). The class number bound for \( \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5}) \) is 1, the simplest. | DEPTH: 8 — Directly links number theor Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
