Coupling Geometry Case Study III: The Global System, 1991–2026
This case study applies Coupling Geometry to the global system from 1991 to 2026, and argues that the period represents a shift in the unit of analysis itself: the emergence of the first fully integrated planetary system — a system with no outside. Previous cases — Rome, the Stalinist system — were bounded systems interacting with an exterior that supplied expansion, defection, and external buffering; after 1991, all three are foreclosed. The analysis traces the arc: the integration event as the last expansion windfall, roughly doubling the labour force available to capital in under a decade; the distributional restructuring documented in Milanovic’s elephant curve; the legitimating ideology of globalisation at its peak and its erosion after 2008; declining net energy and crossed planetary boundaries as the material constraint; competitive optimisation converting buffers into throughput — just-in-time, deregulation, austerity — leaving the system maximally efficient and maximally fragile; recovery-phase cost-offloading ratcheting distributional asymmetry through three crisis–recovery cycles in seventeen years; fragmentation as the cheapest coordination response to ideological failure with no systemic alternative; and the refractive field at global scale, where GDP growth obscures contracting underlying capacity and no external vantage point exists for calibration. The case names five historically unprecedented features — no outside, no alternative, the scale-mismatch between global distribution and national contestation, tight coupling at planetary scale, and ecological constraint as system boundary — and states its own limitations, including that exit pathways for a system with no outside have no historical precedent to calibrate against. Scoring is analyst-dependent, the quantitative series are the programme’s compilations from public sources, and the analysis is post-hoc: the study demonstrates applicability and is not a test.
