Referential Function as a Complementary Driver of Biological Evolution

Darwinian natural selection explains how advantageous traits become established through differential survival and reproduction, but it provides a less direct explanation for the progressive emergence of adaptive complexity. Here, I propose referential function as a complementary driver of biological evolution. Referential function is defined as the capacity of living systems to acquire, construct, and utilize internal models of structured environmental information for adaptive regulation. As referential function expands, organisms gain access to increasingly diverse adaptive possibilities, which subsequently become subject to natural selection. This perspective complements, rather than replaces, Darwinian evolution by distinguishing the generation of adaptive possibilities from their differential persistence. The proposed framework offers a functional perspective for understanding the long-term increase in adaptive complexity and provides empirically testable predictions for comparative evolutionary biology.
