Corporate social responsibility of the redeemed christian church of god and sustainable rural development in southwestern nigeria

This study examined the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Akufo, Aba Saliu, and Bakatari communities in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study investigated development initiatives and processes of transformation and was anchored in Social Capital and Transformational Development theories, using a mixed-methods research design. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analysed thematically. Findings reveal that the CSR-RCCG interventions encompassed healthcare services, food support, educational assistance, agricultural empowerment, vocational training, and infrastructure development. The initiatives reduced poverty, diversified rural livelihoods and income, increased access to social amenities, and enhanced community well-being. However, there are social consequences, including a change in gender relations, household power dynamics, and patterns of social inclusion and exclusion. In conclusion, faith-based CSR initiatives are important mechanisms for sustainable rural development and social transformation, but require collaboration among stakeholders to ensure long-term development.
