College Gandai Abstract Agriculture continues to be the backbone of rural economies in developing countries like India, providing livelihood to a majority of the population. However, excessive dependence on a few traditional crops such as rice and wheat has led to problems like declining soil fertility, groundwater depletion, low farm incomes, and increased vulnerability to climate change. In this context, crop diversification has emerged as a crucial strategy for achieving sustainable rural development. Crop diversification refers to the shift from mono-cropping systems to the cultivation of a wider range of crops including pulses, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, fodder crops, and high-value commercial crops. This paper examines the concept of crop diversification, its determinants, patterns, and its role in promoting rural development. The study highlights how diversification contributes to income generation, employment creation, poverty reduction, food and nutritional security, and environmental sustainability. It also discusses challenges in adopting crop diversification and suggests policy measures to strengthen its role in rural development. The paper concludes that crop diversification is not merely an agricultural strategy but a comprehensive rural development tool essential for inclusive and sustainable growth.
