Exploring Nonverbal Communication Through the Lens of Relational Frame Theory

This research explores the role of Relational Frame Theory in deciphering and perceiving nonverbal cues in interpersonal communication. In the study, six participants were interviewed based on their ability to explain Nonverbal Communication and function via Relational Frame Theory (RFT) in various relationships. Three broad themes were identified for analysis: categorical interpretation of nonverbal signs, interpersonal recontextualization of nonverbal signals, emotional representation, and interchange associated with nonverbal communication. The study shows that people reacted to nonverbal cues differently depending on their relationship with the reaction subject. It proved that relation types affect how people embrace such nonverbal cues. The study can help analyze interindividual interactions in therapy, education, and other potentially effective communal practices. Further research should be devoted to experimenting with RFT in various cultures and contexts of communication other than the workplace and adapting it to practice.
