India's Largest Nuclear Plant Data Breach-The Million-Dollar Security Gap Nobody Talks About - OT / ICS Cybersecurity
A Million Dollar Security Gap Nobody Talks About! India's largest nuclear plant just made headlines for a data breach. 858,000 files stolen. 14.3 GB leaked on the dark web. Here's the twist: the reactor was never touched. The compromise didn't come through the plant's OT network at all. It came through a contractor's server. Hosted by a fourth-party VPS provider. Three hops away from anything the plant owner actually controlled. No official Root Cause Analysis has been published, and it may never be. But we don't need one to learn the lesson, because this isn't a new pattern. SolarWinds. NotPetya. Tata Electronics. Different companies, different years, same shape of failure. And here's the part that should worry every OT security leader: this gap sits outside the SANS Five ICS Critical Controls. Incident response, defensible architecture, visibility, secure remote access, vulnerability management, all vital, none of them built to catch a breach that happens inside your vendor's vendor's infrastructure. You can lock every door in your plant. But if you hand a key to a partner with poor security, the lock was never the problem. I broke down the full timeline, the parties involved, and a practical mitigation checklist for third and fourth-party risk in OT environments.
