The Half-Woven Screen

In a tiny fable of mine (Nguyen, 2024), Kingfisher's earthen burrow leaks in a storm, and he hires the Flowerpecker family to weave a grass rain-screen; they finish only half before the storm arrives. Searching afterward for the same weavers to complete the job, Kingfisher cannot find them. Zhuangzi then delivers the news: the same storm swept away every Flowerpecker nest as well, so the weavers no longer exist to be found. Kingfisher closes his eyes and accepts it, an instance of wu wei (無為), acting through non-action (Slingerland, 2003). This note extracts two claims from that small scene. First, the burrow's damage and the weavers' disappearance are not two unlucky, independent events but two consequences of one storm, so learning about the first should raise, never lower, one's assessment of the second (Proposition 1). Second, once Zhuangzi's news fully resolves the uncertainty, the expected value of continuing to search collapses to a strictly negative number, so stopping is not resignation but the unique Bayes-optimal response to what is now known (Proposition 2).
