The Effect of using Real-Life Examples on Students' Comprehension of Basic Math Concepts

Abstract. This study investigated the effect of using real-life examples on the understanding of basic mathematical concepts among Grade 9 students at Wenceslao Trinidad Memorial National High School during the 2025–2026 academic year. It specifically compared students’ comprehension under traditional teaching methods and instruction integrating real-life examples, focusing on knowledge retention, conceptual application, and problem-solving skills. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using weighted mean and comparative analysis. Findings revealed that students taught through traditional methods demonstrated lower understanding due to the abstract nature of instruction and minimal connection to everyday contexts. Conversely, students exposed to real-life examples exhibited higher comprehension, as they could relate mathematical concepts to practical situations. Improvements were also noted in information retention, application of concepts, and problem-solving abilities. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the two teaching approaches, highlighting the effectiveness of contextualized instruction. The study recommends that teachers adopt strategies incorporating real-life applications, provide continuous assessment, and contextualize lessons to enhance learning outcomes. Overall, integrating real-life examples proves to be an effective method for making mathematics more meaningful, engaging, and relevant to students, thereby improving their overall understanding and performance in the subject. Keywords: Real-life Examples; Mathematical Concepts; Problem-solving skills; Traditional teaching methods; and Contextualized Instructions; Application Concepts
