AI-Powered Phishing in the Era of Generative AI: Emerging Risks, Business Impact, and Organizational Defense Strategies

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping cybersecurity by enabling both cyber defense and cyber offense. Phishing, one of the oldest cyber threats, has evolved dramatically through Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), which allow attackers to craft personalized, grammatically correct, and context-aware phishing content at scale. AI-powered phishing increases the risk of credential theft, financial fraud, Business Email Compromise (BEC), ransomware, and data breaches, while conventional detection techniques struggle to keep pace. This study examines the evolution of phishing attacks, the role of Generative AI in cybercrime, the business impact of AI-driven attacks on organizations, and existing defense mechanisms, using a qualitative methodology based on secondary data. The findings show that AI has amplified attacker capabilities while simultaneously equipping organizations with powerful tools for threat detection, behavioral analysis, automated incident response, and predictive security. The study proposes the AI-SHIELD Framework, an integrated model combining AI-based detection, employee awareness, identity management, governance, incident response, and continuous monitoring. The research concludes that a proactive, AI-enabled, and governance-driven cybersecurity strategy is essential for organizations to withstand the next generation of phishing threats.
