Haidarian Friday paper: Stress shield in dental implantology, the disguised culprit. Another introduction to implant abutment connection classification and the need to leave the platform switching concept behind and move forward
Platform switching is deceiving backwardening concepts in the implant dentistry field. It distracts us from the two major issues: corrosion and stress shield. Evaluation of the abutment-implant connection performance depending on the cone angle is the only true, correct, right, valid, and sound way. Stress shield is one of the major causes of bone osteolysis around metallic implants due to the resultant disturbed stress distribution between the different parts of the implant. Stress shield is simply the loss of load during load transfer. In this paper, we want to approach this issue of quitting platform switch umbrella of unawareness and go forward for cone evaluation depending on cone angle, reviewing it from a mechanical perspective
