The Impact of Extensive Reading on English Vocabulary Development: Benefits and Practical Implications

Vocabulary knowledge is one of the most important components of successful English language learning. However, many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners find it difficult to expand their vocabulary through traditional memorization techniques. Extensive reading has emerged as an effective approach that allows learners to acquire new vocabulary naturally by reading a large amount of interesting and comprehensible texts. This article examines the impact of extensive reading on English vocabulary development and discusses its benefits for language learners and teachers. It also explores how repeated exposure to words in meaningful contexts improves vocabulary retention, reading fluency, language confidence, and overall language proficiency. Furthermore, the paper provides practical recommendations for incorporating extensive reading into English language teaching. Based on findings from previous research, the study concludes that extensive reading is an effective and sustainable strategy for vocabulary development and should become an essential component of English language education.
