Crossing Cultures, Bridging Disciplines: Interdisciplinary Insights From Speech-Language Pathology and Music Therapy Study Abroad Experiences

Purpose: This clinical focus article examines interdisciplinary study abroad programming in allied health care, focusing on interprofessional collaboration between speech-language pathology and music therapy. Through analysis of a specific interdisciplinary study abroad experience, we outline key programmatic elements, clinical competencies, and considerations for serving diverse populations, and we discuss how integrated international experiences can enhance both cultural competence and clinical expertise across health care disciplines. Conclusions: The interdisciplinary study abroad program described successfully advanced several key objectives, including experiential learning, clinical confidence building, and cultural competency development. Students demonstrated growth through their engagement with diverse cultural experiences and clinical practices, though our goal of establishing sustainable community partnerships remains an ongoing process. The program highlighted how interprofessional study abroad experiences effectively prepare students for the collaborative and culturally complex nature of modern health care practice. While such programs present unique challenges requiring careful institutional planning, our experience suggests that focused attention to core principles and specific skill development can create valuable learning opportunities for students and faculty. These findings provide a framework for other allied health disciplines seeking to develop interdisciplinary international programs, while acknowledging the need for adaptation to specific professional and cultural contexts.
