Adjustable Magnetic Lumboperitoneal Shunt Application in Normal-Pressure Hydrocephalus: Two Case Reports
ABstract Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a condition characterized by enlargement of the cerebral ventricles and increased intracranial pressure. It can be idiopathic or secondary. Its classic clinical triad is speech disorder, gait disorder and dementia. After the clinical and radiological diagnoses are established, lumbar puncture is frequently performed to drain the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the patients to monitor their symptoms. If there is a response to treatment with CSF drainage, shunt surgery is performed. We herein report the cases of 2 male patients aged 75 and 82, whose treatment involved the adjustable magnetic lumoperitoneal shunt method, and significant improvement in their complaints was recorded in their 1-month postoperative check-ups. Lumboperitoneal shunt can be applied more frequently in NPH patients as a less-invasive and easy method.
