Mouth Cancer: The Importance of Awareness, Prevention, and Early Detection
Mouth cancer, also known as oral cavity cancer, can affect various parts of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, and the inner lining of the cheeks. This paper examines the importance of awareness, prevention, and early detection in reducing the impact of mouth cancer. Research shows that early diagnosis greatly improves survival rates and reduces the need for aggressive treatments that can affect speaking, eating, and overall quality of life. The main risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly the HPV-16 strain. Recent studies have shown an increase in HPV-related oral cancers among younger adults. Regular dental examinations play an important role in identifying early warning signs and precancerous changes before they develop into advanced disease. Increasing public awareness of risk factors and symptoms can help encourage earlier diagnosis, improve treatment outcomes, and reduce deaths caused by mouth cancer.
