Framework for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Operationalization and Value Realization
Electrical battery technology is not new. Experiments with electric charge storage began in the mid‐1700s. In 1800, Alessandro Volta invented the first true electrical battery. After two centuries of innovation, deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is accelerating globally. BESS is becoming a leader of the distributed energy resource (DER) movement, reshaping the energy flow by co‐locating capacity with customer load instead of the traditional generation to customer model. The versatility of BESS enables operators to inject or draw energy from the electric grid on command, providing greater grid flexibly.
