The Dynamics of an American Dream: Perspectives of America in E. C. Osondu’s "Voice of America"

Migrant narratives written by Africans increasingly reflect the perception that life outside Africa is fraught with diverse risks. Studies show that these narratives have projected themes that are not limited to but also reflect the prevalence of identity issues, alienation, racism, cosmopolitanism, disillusionment, and more over the past decade, attesting to the complexities of transnational existence for Nigerian migrants. Despite these apparent difficulties, the migration of citizens from postcolonies across international borders continues to thrive as a response to socioeconomic and, at times, political realities. This article adopts a descriptive approach to critically and literarily analyze five purposively selected short stories from E. C. Osondu’s collection, Voice of America. Through a close reading of these short stories, the article investigates the complex dynamics of migration. Also, it examines how America is imagined, experienced, and portrayed through the nuanced perspectives of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. These stories reveal a Nigerian perspective about America, things American, and the motivations that make migrating to America significant for Nigerians, while interrogating the veracity of the “American dream.” Nevertheless, while the narratives comment on the precarity of the immigrant experience, the stories foreground a metaphorized America, highlighting the complicated nature of the American Dream and its potentially elusive nature for the Nigerian immigrant in the United States of America, in modern times. This article concludes that the narratives underscore idealized views of America, which are often easily challenged by the realities that define immigrants’ lived experiences.[Las narrativas migrantes escritas por autores africanos reflejan cada vez más la percepción de que la vida fuera de África está plagada de diversos riesgos. Abstract
