Through the Chinese Mirror The Mechanics of the Unified Laws of History (Drafted since 2022) / 中国之鉴:历史统一规律的运行机制(壬寅年起记录) About this work An independent interdisciplinary research project in history and sociology. Beginning with major questions in Chinese history and reality, and grounded in established scholarship and rigorous scientific methods, it ultimately develops a unified framework for explaining social evolution, institutional transformation, and the long-term rise and fall of civilizations. Included files "[Refined and Guided Edition] Through the Chinese Mirror The Mechanics of the Unified Laws of History (Drafted since 2022).pdf" This file contains the Refined and Guided Edition of the English manuscript. Completed on July 14, 2026, it represents the final work completed within the entire project and serves as the recommended edition for first-time readers. "Through the Chinese Mirror The Mechanics of the Unified Laws of History (Drafted since 2022).pdf" This is the complete English translation of the manuscript, corresponding almost entirely to the Chinese original. It was initially completed on July 4, 2026 and contains more than 320,000 words. "Thoughts on the Future (Chinese-English Bilingual).pdf" This is a short essay based on the content of the manuscript but independent of it, including both English and Chinese original versions in a bilingual format. "Through the Chinese Mirror The Mechanics of the Unified Laws of History (Drafted since 2022) Chinese Original [include Author's Preface and introduction].pdf" This is a revised Chinese edition of the manuscript. The original autobiographical opening has been replaced with a dedicated Author's Preface and Introduction, aligning the overall structure of the Chinese text with that of the standard English edition. "ARCHIVAL_RECORD.md" This file documents the relationship between the Zenodo archive and the accompanying GitHub repository, and provides SHA-256 hashes for verifying the integrity of all released PDF files. "PROJECT_METADATA.md" This file contains the complete publication metadata of the project, including the title, author, publication date, included files, background, abstract, keywords, notes, contact information, licensing interpretation, and other publication-related information. It serves as the permanent reference for the project's publication metadata, independent of the editable project webpage. "AUTHOR_DECLARATION.md" This file records the author's formal declarations regarding authorship, long-term preservation intent, interpretation of the CC BY 4.0 license, and the authoritative status of the uploaded archival files. It is intended to remain a permanent part of the project's archival record. Background I was born into an ordinary Chinese family of modest means. During my childhood and adolescence, reading was one of the few pursuits that neither my family nor the broader social environment regarded as an unproductive distraction. As a result, I developed a lifelong habit of reading and gradually found great enjoyment in critical learning and independent reflection. When I entered university, I chose to study mathematics. My university campus was located on the outskirts of a major city, and throughout my undergraduate years I frequently traveled to remote towns and rural areas nearby. These experiences greatly deepened my understanding of the realities of Chinese society. Combined with my extensive reading, they inspired numerous reflections, many of which were recorded as scattered diary entries. In the autumn of 2022, I experienced an unexpected breakthrough while contemplating what I regarded as one of the most decisive questions in Chinese history: why did the historical trajectory of China diverge so fundamentally from that of the rest of the world, especially the Western world? As I pursued this question further, I found that it resembled the loose end of a tangled skein of yarn. Once that single thread was pulled free, the broader process of human historical development gradually unfolded with remarkable clarity. In retrospect, the most intellectually demanding part of the entire manuscript was completed during the following two years. By the end of 2024, I decided to transform these previously scattered notes into a coherent manuscript. The first complete Chinese edition was finished in mid-March 2025, containing approximately 420,000 Chinese characters. During the following year, the manuscript continued to expand through substantial revisions and additions. In May 2026, I completed its concluding postscript, bringing the finalized Chinese edition to approximately 450,000 Chinese characters. During the same month, I also completed an independent companion essay entitled Thoughts on the Future. Over the following two months, I translated the manuscript into English. By early July 2026, two English editions had been completed: a faithful translation corresponding closely to the Chinese original, and a Refined and Guided Edition, in which introductory notes and structural guidance were added to facilitate reading for an international audience. Notes Although the Chinese original has a relatively colloquial tone due to the origin and writing process of the manuscript, it remains the cornerstone of this project. The Chinese language and concern for Chinese history have always been the underlying tone of the manuscript. Subsequent English editions and related materials should be regarded as companion works to this Chinese original. However, due to the author's personal circumstances and the complexity of the network environment in which the author currently lives, it may take a considerable amount of time for emails to be read and replied to. Responses will be provided whenever circumstances permit. Please also note that this email address may eventually become unavailable because of factors beyond the author's control. If this happens, future contact information, if any, will be announced through the author's publicly maintained archival repositories whenever possible. Throughout all publicly released versions of this work, the author publishes under the name Adrian Mercer. Version 2.0 Update Notes This version introduces several improvements to the published files: Added a "Copyright and Open Access License" and a "Declaration of Irrevocable Open-Access License" to the front matter of every PDF file, explicitly stating that this work is permanently released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Renamed the PDF files previously containing Chinese characters in their filenames using English-only filenames, in order to avoid potential character-encoding or compatibility issues across different repositories and operating systems. Corrected several minor formatting and table-of-contents issues to improve consistency and readability. No changes have been made to the core arguments, analytical framework, or scholarly conclusions of the work. Version 2.0 is therefore fully compatible with Version 1.0 in terms of academic content, while providing improved long-term accessibility, interoperability, and archival stability. Version 2.01 Update Notes Only minor clerical and formatting errors were corrected.
