Towards the Construction of a Global Database from Kubler: The Needs and Challenges of Implementing New Technologies and AI in Museum Collection Management

This paper explores the potential benefits of developing an interoperable global database for museum collections inspired by George Kubler’s theory (1962), combined with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems capable of identifying visual correspondences and relational patterns across collections. The proposal aims to democratize access to museum collections, foster transnational collaboration, and incorporate underrepresented narratives, thereby encouraging a renewed approach to art history, conservation, and digital museology. Furthermore, this study addresses the methodological and technological challenges inherent in the digitization of collections, drawing on recent research concerning data quality, interoperability, and participatory governance in the field of cultural heritage.
