THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SMART CITY MODEL IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: A CRITICAL STUDY WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW

Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of the smart city model in environmental protection within the framework of international environmental law by analyzing the extent to which these legal rules respond to the technological transformations brought about by this urban model. It aims to assess the adequacy of the international legal framework governing smart cities, determine the extent of its compatibility with the principles of international environmental law and the Sustainable Development Goals, and analyze the major legal challenges facing its implementation. The study concludes that the effectiveness of smart cities in environmental protection is not determined by technological advancement per se, but rather by the capacity of the international legal framework to keep pace with such developments through the enhancement of the legal framework, the promotion of environmentally sound technology transfer, and the regulation of emerging legal issues associated with the application of artificial intelligence. Keywords:Smart City; International Environmental Law; Environmental Protection; Sustainable Development; Environmentally Sound Technology.
