Activities of Traditional Herbal Formulations: A Promising Adjunctive Approach for Respiratory Infections

Abstract: Respiratory infections are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the treatment of these infections has been complicated by the emergence of antibiotic resistance and infections associated with biofilm. Many traditional herbal formulas have been used for centuries in medicine and are starting to be recognized as viable complementary or alternative therapies. This review focuses on the comprehensive exploration of the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of herbal agents, their mechanism of action, and the possibility of overcoming the disadvantages of conventional agents. Herbal compounds have a variety of inhibitory mechanisms against bacterial pathogens, such as the disruption of cell walls and membranes, the inhibition of protein synthesis, and the interference with metabolic pathways. Furthermore, plenty of herbs regulate the host immune response, increasing the clearance of the pathogens and decreasing excessive inflammation. They have some unique properties that inhibit biofilm formation and disrupt pre-existing biofilms, especially important for treating chronic infections, which are protected by pre-existing biofilms. The anti-biotic interactions in herbal formulations also indicate that they can lead to decreased requirement of anti-biotics and lesser side effects when used together and delay the onset of anti-biotic resistance. This has led to the development of more effective herbal formulations, with the use of advanced drug delivery systems, including nanotechnology and encapsulation, to increase the bioavailability, stability, and targeted delivery of herbal compounds. But there are problems with the standardization, scalability, and regulation of herbal formulations. Consistency of dosage is a major challenge to achieve the stable therapeutic effects, which is closely dependent on the concentration of the active compound and its variability due to the varying growth conditions in the plants, as well as different preparation processes. Looking forward, integration of genomics and proteomics is highlighted to explore the molecular basis of the actions of herbs, validation by clinical trials to establish the efficacy, and sustainable production to cater to the increasing demand. Herbal preparations can help make a difference in the fight against respiratory infections, combat antibiotic resistance, and provide sustainable healthcare solutions all over the world by combining traditional knowledge with scientific methods.
