Mary, Our Advocate

This article constitutes the third part of a trilogy devoted to the Marian titles of Co-redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Graces, and Our Advocate, which are closely interconnected within the Catholic tradition. Throughout the twentieth century, various theologians and Marian movements proposed the possibility of a joint dogmatic definition of these titles, although this proposal was not adopted by the Second Vatican Council. The present study focuses on the title "Our Advocate," through which the Church expresses the Blessed Virgin Mary's maternal intercession on behalf of the faithful. Drawing upon Sacred Scripture, the Patristic and spiritual tradition, theological reflection, and various documents of the Magisterium, this work presents the meaning of this maternal mission, always subordinate to and dependent upon Jesus Christ, the one Redeemer and Mediator. The aim of this study is to present, in a clear and accessible manner, the meaning of the title Our Advocate within Catholic doctrine and spirituality, as well as its relationship to the titles of Co-redemptrix and Mediatrix, with which it forms a coherent unity within Mary's maternal mission.
