ChatAlytics: A statistically significant friendship - A tool to explore statistics using friendly conversations

Statistics anxiety remains one of the most persistent barriers to learning quantitative methods, and introductory courses frequently fail to connect formal statistical vocabulary to contexts that students find meaningful. This article describes ChatAlytics, a free, open, single-file web tool that teaches more than seventy foundational statistical concepts through a simulated messenger-style conversation between two close friends. Each exchange in the conversation illustrates one concept, from variables and descriptive statistics through hypothesis testing, regression modelling, and generalisability, with the statistical term emerging naturally as the punchline of an otherwise ordinary chat between friends. The tool renders the conversation inside a realistic smartphone interface with timed message playback, presents a formal one-line definition of each concept as it appears, and includes an integrated recall quiz in which learners identify the concept illustrated by a randomly selected exchange. Design decisions are grounded in research on humour in statistics instruction, cognitive load, multimedia learning, and test-enhanced learning, and the interface follows colour-accessible palette guidance throughout. The tool requires no installation, no account, and no data collection, and runs entirely in the browser. ChatAlytics is intended for students across research disciplines and for instructors seeking a low-stakes, affectively positive entry point to statistical vocabulary. The tool itself is available at https://rvanilakshmi.github.io/ChatAlytics
