The new infrastructure development and rural youth aspirations: the case of the Trans-Sulawesi Railway, Indonesia

This interdisciplinary agrarian-transport study explores how the new Trans-Sulawesi Railway development influences rural youth employment aspirations and migration intentions in Barru District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using an online survey of 245 youths, the study compares current employment patterns with future job preferences and well-being expectations. Findings reveal a shift from agriculture toward manufacturing and services, driven by improved accessibility and urban opportunities. While many youths prefer to remain in Barru, limited local opportunities may encourage commuting or out-migration to nearby cities such as Makassar and Pare-pare. Well-being aspirations differ by sector: youth favouring agriculture prioritise land availability and work security, whereas those preferring non-agriculture emphasise health facilities and amenities. Across both groups, social security and work safety are key concerns. The study highlights that infrastructure alone cannot ensure inclusive rural development; policies must create local opportunities and integrate youth aspirations to sustain livelihoods and guide rural transformation.
