OCEAN: A Five-Phase Framework for Meaningful Change
Managing meaningful change requires more than motivation, insight, or isolated techniques. This paper introduces OCEAN, a five-phase conceptual framework for structuring non-clinical developmental conversations and change-oriented interventions in coaching, leadership, and organizational settings. The five phases are Observe, Create, Expose, Awaken, and Nurture. In Observe, actors develop a systemic, present-oriented understanding of the situation. In Create, they turn that understanding into goals that are meaningful and actionable. In Expose, they identify attempted solutions, resistances, biases, and self-deceptions that maintain ineffective patterns. In Awaken, they activate new behaviors through planning, reframing, paradoxical movement, and emotionally significant experiences. In Nurture, they consolidate progress through repetition, habits, connection, and sustainable contexts. OCEAN integrates insights from systemic and interactional thinking, goal construction, emotional awareness, and habit consolidation into a structured process. I present it as an approach for guiding change in individuals and teams, particularly within coaching and organizational development contexts, and outline directions for future research.
