The Point of Inflection: Paid Conquesting as a Second Displacement Mechanism Alongside the Linkage Gap

This paper documents a second, distinct mechanism of brand displacement in conversational AI: paid conquesting, in which a competitor purchases ad placement inside ChatGPT timed to appear at the moment a consumer is evaluating a named rival brand. Drawing on a worked example involving Adobe and paid placements from Docusign and WooCommerce, together with Adthena's finding that a third-party ad appears in 86% of direct brand-comparison queries, we distinguish conquesting from the Linkage Gap documented in WP-2026-14 and formalized in WP-2026-20. The Linkage Gap is a retrieval and activation failure internal to the model's reasoning process. Conquesting is an external, commercial intervention layered on top of that process, and is not addressed by structured evidence infrastructure alone. We argue that a brand's exposure to conquesting is highest at exactly the moments where organic GEO and Linkage Gap remediation succeed, the point at which a brand is winning the reasoning conversation and a competitor has the strongest incentive to intervene, and that defense accordingly requires paid and organic strategy to be run as a single coordinated motion rather than two separate budgets.
