The Participanthood Problem

This paper takes up the question that Scrutinized Awareness Theory leaves open: once awareness has crossed into what must be carried, what becomes of the one who carries it? It argues that if identity is the stabilized pattern of what has been carried, continued carrying cannot leave identity unchanged.Participanthood names the continuing transformation of identity under carried implication: the condition in which what has been undergone remains active in continuation as remainder. The paper distinguishes carrying from memory, duration from sequence, remainder from trauma and narrative, and answerability from mere causal effect.Drawing on Parfit, Williams, Bergson, Brison, Butler, Schechtman, Ricoeur, Korsgaard, and Merleau-Ponty, the paper develops five modes of identity transformation — accumulation, reorientation, revision, fracture, and integration — and then considers artificial systems through detachability and exposure. The account of “must” grounds carrying in non-detachability rather than in psychological intensity, and a distinction between participational fracture and mere unintegrated damage marks the lower bound of the concept. The paper concludes that Scrutinized Awareness Theory asks when awareness becomes something that must be carried, while participanthood asks what becomes of the one who carries it.
