Catalyst-Controlled Regioselectivity Switching in the Bromolactonization of ( Z )-Stilbenecarboxylic Acids
)-stilbenecarboxylic acids has been developed, wherein regioselectivity is controlled by the catalyst. Nitrogen-centered catalysts such as tetramethylguanidine afford five-membered lactones, whereas sulfur-centered catalysts, including thioureas, give the corresponding six-membered isomers. DFT calculations provide mechanistic insight into the origin of the observed regioselectivity switching.
