Abstract

[EN] Transhumanism promises to overcome death by transferring the mind to a more durable substrate. Yet it inherits a problem it rarely confronts: if consciousness is copied to a new medium, does the subject survive, or is a simulacrum born that believes itself to be him? This paper argues the answer is not only philosophical but material — it depends on substrate architecture. Where memory and processing are separate, identity is transferable data and therefore copyable: forgetting and substitution remain structurally open. In-memory neuromorphic computing, where to remember and to compute are the same physical act, offers another condition. We show that continuity is not an oddity to be engineered: nature already solves it — in metamorphosis, where memory survives the body's near-total dissolution (Blackiston et al., 2008), and in human lineage, where an identity persists across generations without ever being copied. The Ancestral Transhumanism axiom "evolve without forgetting" names that condition; this paper formulates it as a substrate specification. This is Working Paper II of the Ancestral Transhumanism (TA) series, continuing TA I "Carried Evolution."
