Engineering vs. Scientific Approximation: From Ren Zhengfei's Remarks to Precision Approximation Epistemology
This paper distinguishes two fundamentally different modes of approximation—engineering (optimizing within known precision boundaries) vs. scientific (approximating in unknown domains)—and argues that China's transition bottleneck is a cognitive paradigm shift rather than a resource or policy problem. It identifies six constraints on the precision ceiling (statistical inference, basic sciences, education model, computing power, discipline construction, globalization) and demonstrates precision migration through a traditional cognitive framework + AI case with a recursive formula as conceptual demonstration. The paper positions engineering approximation as a fourth dimension—efficiency approximation—within the Precision Approximation Epistemology framework, alongside law approximation, meaning approximation, and practical testing.
