Promoting Open Science & Open Education through Accessible and Electronic Lab Notebooks
<p>This material introduces Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) - digital tools for recording research information.</p> <p><b>Why?</b></p> <p>Documentation of lab procedures and results is critical for <b>reproducible </b>and <b>open science</b>. While a variety of electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) are commercially available, the cost may be prohibitive for institutions and an additional financial burden for students.</p> <p><b>Free options have limitations</b> or are cumbersome to implement in a classroom. Importantly, this is an opportunity to integrate documentation training into an open science curriculum and leverage existing knowledge available on Pressbooks.</p> <p>This resource uses the expertise from computer science graduate students and a microbiology graduate student to develop user friendly (for non-computer scientists and new adopters) instructions for <strong>GitHub ELN template&nbsp;</strong>and training materials for undergraduate lab-based courses.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Introductory video:</h3> <p>[[Video(/community/groups/octopus/File:/uploads/movies/Carlos_ELNs_OCTOPUS_Video-1.webm)]]</p> <p><a href="https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/octopus/File:/uploads/movies/Carlos_ELNs_OCTOPUS_Video-1.webm">Download the video (200MB)</a></p> <p><a href="https://qubeshub.org/publications/5707/supportingdocs/default">View the publication files and links here</a>.</p> <hr /> <p>Please visit the <a href="https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/octopus">OCTOPUS Group page</a> for additional information and other curriculum resources.</p> <p>OCTOPUS was generously supported by the <a href="https://www.orcaopen.org/" target="_blank">Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA)</a> with additional support from the <a href="https://bioquest.org" target="_blank">BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium</a>.</p> <p style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/octopus"><img alt="OCTOPUS logo" src="https://qubeshub.org/groups/octopus/File:/uploads/images/octopus_logo.png" style="height: 70px; width: 100px;" /></a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.orcaopen.org/" target="_blank"><img alt="ORCA logo" src="https://qubeshub.org/groups/octopus/File:/uploads/images/ORCA_logo.png" style="height: 100px; width: 100px;" /></a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://bioquest.org/" target="_blank"><img alt="BioQUEST logo" src="https://qubeshub.org/groups/octopus/File:/uploads/images/BQ_logo.png" style="height: 41px; width: 150px;" /></a></p>
