A review on BIM’s contribution to an efficient RFI management in complex geotechnical and construction projects

Abstract Requests for Information (RFIs) are essential for technical communication and decision-making in construction projects, yet their management remains fragmented and inefficient, particularly in complex geotechnical contexts. This study examines how Building Information Modeling (BIM) and GeoBIM environments can support more structured and collaborative RFI workflows. A qualitative and exploratory approach was adopted, combining a systematic literature review, analysis of international standards, and examination of representative case studies with different BIM maturity levels. The analysis identifies persistent challenges related to interoperability, workflow standardization, and the integration of geotechnical information in digital environments. In response to these gaps, a conceptual BIM-based RFI management framework is proposed, introducing the CUBO-RFI as a parametric three-dimensional object to enhance traceability, visualization, and coordination. Although not presented as an empirically validated solution, the framework illustrates the potential of model-based approaches to improve communication, monitoring, and lifecycle tracking of technical queries. The findings further highlight the role of BIM and GeoBIM as enabling technologies for integrated information flows and more informed decision-making in complex projects. This study contributes to the digital transformation of the AECO sector by offering a structured conceptual model that supports future empirical validation and practical implementation.
