Abdel Rahman Badawi and His Contributions to Islamic Philosophy

This article offers a critical review of Luay Hatem Yaqoob’s monograph Abdurrahman Badawi and His Contributions to Islamic Philosophy. It argues that the book constitutes a significant contribution to Turkish-language scholarship by providing one of the first monograph-length studies devoted specifically to Badawi’s engagement with Islamic philosophy. At the same time, the article contends that the study remains largely descriptive in character and refrains from a sustained critical evaluation of Badawi’s philosophical project within contemporary debates on Islamic intellectual history. While Yaqoob’s extensive use of Arabic primary sources represents a clear methodological strength, the limited engagement with international scholarship constrains the book’s analytical scope and comparative reach. The article concludes that, despite these limitations, the monograph marks an important step toward a more systematic reassessment of Badawi’s Islamic philosophical thought in Turkish academia. However, a more explicitly comparative and theoretically grounded approach is required for such scholarship to intervene meaningfully in global discussions on modern Islamic philosophy.
