Design and Development of Nonwoven Filters and Back Pressure Analysis Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

This study dealt with Computational Fluid Dynamics carried out for two newly developed wall-flow filters as parallel and star structures inside a Catalytic Converter present in the exhaust manifold. Further, they studied along with optimised nonwoven filter media inserted inside them to analyse the back pressure formed during exhaust filtration process. The total volume of filters along with the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) covered a volume of 1100cc inside the Catalytic Converter in the exhaust system. However, as per existing studies, to maintain the ratio between the filter including DOC to the Catalytic Converter (CC) as 1:3, the model of Catalytic Converter developed with a volume of 3316.6cc in such a way that it has three times the volume and to ensure the free flow of exhaust gas through the system. The whole exhaust system examined with an exhaust air velocity of 26.2 m/s with 70% porosity and 80% porosity and found that the back pressure measurement attained were 27.83 kPa and 26.73 kPa, respectively. These designs revealed that they were within limit and can be utilised for filtration, where the back pressure limitations can be up to 50 kPa for up to 5kW engines.
