The Diverse Clinical Presentation of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Role of BioFire FilmArray Pneumonia Plus Panel: A Case Series
Mycoplasma pneumoniae was discovered in the early 1960s.It has usually been associated with pneumonia outbreaks in communities such as schools, military barracks, and refugee camps; however, lately the organism has also been reported in endemic and occasionally epidemic cases among elderly age-groups.It usually presents in milder forms, but severe infections requiring admission and death in a few cases have also been reported. From our laboratory, we report three cases where M. pneumoniae was detected by the BioFire FilmArray PN plus (Pneumonia) Panel in cases that presented as a case of respiratory infection, varying from mild upper respiratory tract infection to serious cases requiring admission to the intensive care unit and their successful treatment.
