Parent–offspring or siblings? Genetic relatedness and origin of Prunus × yedoensis and Prunus × nudiflora
Prunus × yedoensis and P. × nudiflora are morphologically similar but arose from independent hybridization events. Both share P. itosakura as the maternal parent but have distinct paternal donors and show evidence of asymmetric introgression. Together, these findings highlight the importance of distinct parental combinations and differential gene flow in shaping reticulate evolutionary patterns.
