POTENTIAL FOR EVALUATING NORMAL ROOM MODES EFFECTS USING THE FREQUENCY-DOMAIN COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION DERIVED FROM IMPULSE RESPONSES IN SMALL ROOMS

Appropriate acoustic design and evaluation of small rooms, such as sound studios, are becoming more important. In such rooms, indices capable of quantitatively evaluating the effects of normal room modes are required. The frequency-domain coefficient of variation (FCV) is a potential index that can quantify the effect of modes in actual rooms. This study demonstrates the potential of the FCV for evaluating acoustical performance arising from room modes, using impulse responses of rooms with different volumes, dimensional ratios and sound absorption coefficient computed via the modal expansion method.

Abstract

Appropriate acoustic design and evaluation of small rooms, such as sound studios, are becoming more important. In such rooms, indices capable of quantitatively evaluating the effects of normal room modes are required. The frequency-domain coefficient of variation (FCV) is a potential index that can quantify the effect of modes in actual rooms. This study demonstrates the potential of the FCV for evaluating acoustical performance arising from room modes, using impulse responses of rooms with different volumes, dimensional ratios and sound absorption coefficient computed via the modal expansion method.
