The Role of Kinesiotaping in Atlantoaxial Rotatory Subluxation Associated with Nemaline Myopathy
Atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS) is a rare cause of acute torticollis, often following minor trauma.Although conservative treatment is usually effective, surgery may be needed if it fails.Nemaline myopathy (NM) is a rare neuromuscular disorder with weakness and hypotonia. We report the first case of AARS in an 8-year-old girl with NM after a posterior pharyngeal flap procedure.Conservative management with traction and a Miami brace failed due to hypotonia and ligamentous laxity.Kinesiotaping of the sternocleidomastoid muscles was then applied to aid stabilization, resulting in sustained improvement and successful transition to kinesiotaping with a brace. This case suggests kinesiotaping may enhance conservative management of AARS in patients with underlying muscle weakness by improving stability and reducing recurrence.(
