Prospects for the use of depot drug formulations in dacryology
This literature review analyzes the prospects for the use of depot drug formulations in dacryology. The limited bioavailability of conventional topical agents and the inability to maintain a stable drug concentration on the ocular surface stimulate the development of local controlled-release systems. Punctal plugs and intracanalicular implants, which use hydrogels and biodegradable polymers for prolonged delivery of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs, have been studied extensively. Experimental designs include customizable drug-delivery constructs based on photopolymerizable and composite materials, expanding the possibilities of targeted therapy. Despite the obtained results, the potential of depot systems in the treatment of lacrimal drainage system diseases, including dacryostenosis, requires further investigation in clinical studies.
