The Lopsided Law: Why Zipf, Pareto, and Gutenberg-Richter Have Exponent Exactly One
One axiom. One operation. Zero free parameters. A few giants and a long tail of the small — cities, earthquakes, words, wealth — obey one lopsided law with strength about one (Zipf, Pareto, Gutenberg-Richter). A hundred field-specific models, none deriving the one. This paper forces it. Rank anything by size; the fold’s doubling carries rank r to rank 2r and halves the population at that rank — double the rank, halve the count. A distribution where doubling the rank halves the count is precisely one over the rank, and nothing else. So the exponent is exactly one, the One itself, because the doubling is exact and the halving is the half-One. Zipf (frequency ∝ rank⁻¹) and Gutenberg-Richter (b = 1, a decade per magnitude) are the same unit power law — the fold’s simplest self-similar distribution. Machine-checked; reproduces from one command. A standalone result within the Smithian Fold Theory of Everything (SFTOE).
