A Qualitative Analysis of Factors Influencing Ethical Decision‐Making in the Workplace

ABSTRACT Adding another dimension to the research on the motivations for unethical behavior in business, this paper presents the results of two qualitative studies that utilize in‐depth interviews of business professionals to explore components proposed in theories about ethical decision‐making. Three main themes playing a significant role in the perception of the corporate culture emerge: (1) “Moral Compass (Internal Frame),” (2) “Corporate Culture (External Frame),” and the impact of (3) the Individual's Place within the Organizational Hierarchy (Intersection). The study results have strong implications for businesses as they navigate interpersonal relationships, corporate culture, and new technologies. We emphasize the development of a culture that increases the likelihood of ethical behaviors from their employees, while supporting each person's ownership of their behavior.
