Recent Trends in the Synthesis and Applications of Organic Dyes and Chromophores: A Review

Organic dyes and chromophores remain central to synthetic organic chemistry because their structures can be deliberately tuned to control light absorption, fluorescence, redox behavior, surface binding and molecular recognition. The role of dyes has expanded from coloration of textiles and printing materials to high-value functions in dye-sensitized solar cells, optical sensing, biomedical imaging, security inks and smart materials. This review summarizes recent trends in the synthesis and applications of major organic dye families, including azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine, cyanine, xanthene, BODIPY, coumarin, squaraine and donor-pi-acceptor chromophores. Conventional routes such as diazotization-coupling, Friedel-Crafts acylation, phthalonitrile cyclotetramerization, Knoevenagel condensation and metal-catalyzed cross-coupling are discussed alongside greener approaches involving continuous-flow processing, microwave and ultrasound assistance, aqueous media, solvent minimization and biomass-derived colorants. Particular attention is given to the relationship between molecular architecture and photophysical performance: auxochromic substitution, pi-extension, intramolecular charge transfer, aggregation control, anchoring groups and excited-state stability. Emerging applications are reviewed with emphasis on metal-free and natural DSSC sensitizers, fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors, live-cell and near-infrared bioimaging, organic electronic materials and environmental monitoring. The review also addresses persistent challenges, including photobleaching, poor water solubility, aggregation-caused quenching, incomplete biodegradation, hazardous intermediates and dye-containing wastewater. Future directions are expected to combine predictive computational design, green chemistry, continuous manufacturing and life-cycle assessment to deliver high-performance chromophores with improved safety and sustainability.
