New Opportunities and Advances in Rutin‐Added Active Packaging: A Review

ABSTRACT Preventing spoilage and preserving food at its best quality by extending shelf life is the primary goal of packaging. Biodegradable packages are one of the fields that studies have recently focused on. As these bio‐based polymers can act as an active packaging system by the addition of various active ingredients, different active ingredients are experimented with in the development of active packaging. One of the plant‐based active ingredients is rutin, which has been found promising as an active packaging ingredient owing to its good functional properties. This work focuses on the recent studies of the development of rutin in the bio‐polymers. Rutin, being a flavonoid from natural sources, and its potential as an antioxidant and anti‐microbial activity make rutin a very important active ingredient to improve the functional and mechanical properties of an active package. This review explores the potential, biological activity, development of the active package, application, and challenges of rutin in the packaging field. It also discusses the solubility of rutin, which is a major limitation, minimising the utilisation of rutin. Different incorporation techniques used in various studies are mentioned, stating the complexity of incorporating rutin into biopolymer‐based active packaging.
