Advanced structurally controlled carbon-based materials

Traditional carbon materials often face limitations in simultaneously achieving structural precision, compositional tunability, and processability. In this feature article, we introduce our recent studies on advanced structurally controlled carbon-based materials, referred to as “multinary carbon”, a term inspired by the nomenclature of binary, ternary, and quaternary material systems. This concept encompasses both precisely designed carbon frameworks and multi-element carbon-based systems, aimed at realizing functionalities beyond those of conventional carbon materials. This feature article highlights our recent advances in the bottomup synthesis of ordered carbon frameworks through molecular design, thermal polymerization, carbonization parameters, and graphdiyne-based materials, together with their applications in electrochemical energy storage and catalysis.
