Self-Referential Ignorance: A Unified Framework for Complexity, Adaptation, and Intelligence An Academic Framework on Systemic Limits and Generative Dynamics
Abstract This paper introduces the concept of Self-Referential Ignorance (SRI), defined as the inherent limitation of any system attempting to fully understand, model, or predict itself. The theory proposes that because a system is simultaneously the observer and the observed, complete self-knowledge is mathematically and computationally impossible. This limitation generates structural uncertainty, drives continuous adaptation, and contributes directly to the emergence of complexity across biological, cognitive, social, and technological domains. Self-Referential Ignorance is presented as a unifying principle connecting information theory, evolutionary biology, cognitive science, and systems theory.
