GenAI for Enhancing Ergonomics Education among Civil Engineering Students

Ergonomics is pivotal in mitigating musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and enhancing productivity in the construction industry, yet it remains underemphasized in civil engineering education (CEE). This study investigates the efficacy of integrating ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tool, into ergonomics education to bridge this gap. An experimental study involving 37 fourth-year civil engineering students in India assessed the impact of ChatGPT on learning outcomes through pre- and postintervention assessments. The results revealed statistically significant improvements in posttest scores, with students demonstrating greater understanding of ergonomic concepts and improved ability to identify ergonomic risks following the ChatGPT intervention. The study highlights ChatGPT’s potential as a supplementary educational resource that promotes active learning and develops job-ready ergonomics skills. By leveraging GenAI, educators can adapt their teaching methods to align with the industry’s growing emphasis on health and safety, empowering future professionals with the competencies needed to succeed in the workplace.
