The Eight Gluons: Why the Strong Mediator Count Is m-squared Minus One Equals Eight, and Why It Self-Couples
One axiom. One operation. Zero free parameters. There are exactly eight gluons, not the naive nine. The Standard Model answers with SU(3) group theory; this paper forces the count and the self-coupling that defines the strong force. The mediator count of a prime-p colour sector is p²−1, so the colour-three strong sector has 3²−1 = 8 gluons — the same form that gives the two new forces 24 and 48 mediators. The ‘missing ninth’ is the −1, the colourless combination. And unlike the neutral photon, the gluon carries the colour it mediates and self-couples: the total strong source is 3 (matter 1 + carriers 2) against the photon’s 1. That self-coupling collimates the field into a confining flux tube instead of a spreading cloud. Eight gluons, self-coupling, both forced. Machine-checked; reproduces from one command.
